AN AUTUMN FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT IN THE PEAK DISTRICT
Autumn created a stunning backdrop for family photos that will last a lifetime.
Rachel & Adam had their pre-wedding photoshoot with us in summer, and also wanted to have a photoshoot with their two children.
Autumn was their season of choice for their family photoshoot and, thankfully with no lockdown restrictions, we headed out into the Peak District one afternoon for a couple of fun hours together.
FAMILY PHOTOSHOOTS BRING ON THE FUN!
We believe family photoshoots should be about the fun families have together, and show the special connection between them. This is a beautiful age to photograph children with a family shoot – they have a natural sense of wonder about the world around them, and are full of the fun!
But they also are easily bored and tend to tire after a short period of time, so our skill as photographers needs to be not only technical, but also keeping up the energy and injecting as much fun and variety as possible to hold their attention.
With young children, it helps to choose an interesting location that will capture their imagination and natural curiosity.
CHILDREN AT PRE-WEDDING PHOTOSHOOTS
Some of our couples ask us if they can bring along their children to their pre-wedding shoot and have it double as a couple and family shoot. However, we would ALWAYS recommend separating these into two shoots. It’s our experience that combining the two doesn’t work – at least, not if you want to get the best out of each.
Your pre-wedding shoot is part of your wedding journey as husband-and-wife-to-be – it’s about who you are as a couple, away from being Mummy and Daddy. This photoshoot has a different feel, a different type of connection, to a family photoshoot. It’s all about you, and a celebration of the love between the two of you that set you on this path.
On your couple shoot, you will never properly relax if you are worrying about what the children are doing around you, or wondering where they’ve run off to! We ease you into your couple shoot gradually, to get you used to being photographed, and for us to get to know each other better. That takes a bit of time, and children grow impatient and get bored if they’re just hanging around and not part of the action. In a family photoshoot, we put them right at the forefront of things, which helps to keep them entertained and enjoying the experience.
That’s not to say that we won’t take any photos of just the two of you on your family shoot - we will! - it’s more that the emphasis will be on all of you.
If you’d like to have a family photoshoot, we’d recommend you have your pre-wedding shoot first – it’s always helpful for you and us to have this experience together before we do a family shoot; we find it makes your family shoot really relaxed and you can get the children excited ahead of the photoshoot because you also know what to expect, you already know it’ll be a fun experience and that you’ll feel at ease.
It’s worth taking the time to plan carefully what you’ll wear as a family on your photoshoot. Here, Rachel & Adam had obviously given this a great deal of consideration and their choices were perfect! They had thought about the colour of the season, and mixed and matched beautifully with each other – this really does make a huge difference, and these little pops of seasonal colour in their clothing really add to the beautiful aesthetic of their photographs.
We had a really fun couple of hours together – Rachel & Adam were super-relaxed, the children were excited and got really into the photoshoot.
We can’t wait to photograph them all together again at the wedding!
BEHIND THE SCENES
We love to be in the outdoors photographing couples and families and this was such a fun shoot! Having done Rachel and Adam’s pre-wedding photoshoot a couple of months before, it was fantastic to be out photographing with them again. We were delighted that Covid restrictions at the time were significantly eased and our shoot could go ahead as planned.
We’d been keeping an eye on the autumn colours as usually there’s only a 2-3 week window when things are at their best - we timed the shoot just right and, though we had to reschedule once due to poor weather, we managed to fit in the shoot on the one day of the week when the weather was fine! A couple of days after, we had gale-force winds and all the leaves were gone overnight, so there was definitely some luck involved!
The children were a joy to be around and totally up for trying something new - the family arrived with the perfect attitude: relaxed, open-minded, excited!
